As per Census 2011, there were about 4 million senior citizens in the state of Odisha constituting 9.5% of the total population. The Economic Survey 2018-2019 estimates that the number of senior citizens will grow to 4.9 million (10.8%) by 2021, 6.5 million (13.4%) by 2031 and 8.3 million (16.6%) by 2041. In order to address the challenges faced by senior citizens in the city of Bhubaneswar, the Elderly Care, Wellness and Engagement Program is being implemented in the city in collaboration with Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department and HelpAge India.
The program aims to create a comprehensive model of elderly care through demonstration of model activity centres (Hub and Spoke Centres), primarily to increase their awareness on health and to provide them a platform to remain happy and engaged so that they remain healthy for a longer period of time.
